pr_phil star_next gen_cs 300x254 thumbnailBest-of-bread. Leading edge. Pace-setting. These define the innovations that epitomize Hyundai’s endless passion for motoring. These are Hyundai’s  Next Generation of Automotives.

Their beauty truly stands out. Their elegance is a privilege to behold. Euro-inspired or fluidic in form, their sophistication brings an air of prestige with every ride- it becomes an experience that is altogether engaging and breathing.

Yet what is beauty without power? Hence, Hyundai put its passion work and harnessed the technology to unleash the brawn underneath the beauty. Truly a bold leap, in automotive engineering and undeniably beyond expectations, here are Hyundai’s best-in-class engines that power the future of motoring.

The Hyundai CRDi Legacy

Back in 2004, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) the Official distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the Philippines introduced the Hyundai CRDi, or the Common Rail Direct Injection technology to the Philippine market through its Starex GRX variant. With this breakthrough diesel engine technology, Hyundai provides a timely answer to the growing market clamor for enhanced engine efficiency. This diesel-fed powerplant soon found its way into Hyundai’s succeeding lineup of automobiles dubbed as “Innovations for Humanity”, providing the market a complete  range of CRDi-powered vehicles fitting specific lifestyle needs. Years later, after pioneering a new platform in its diesel engine lineup through this revolutionary technology, the Hyundai brand has become  synonymous with CRDi, reinforcing Hyundai’s technological integrity and reliability as a world class automaker.

As the demand for more nimble, powerful cars rose, Hyundai also stepped up to conquer the challenge by furthering the capabilities of the CRDi engine platform with turbocharger technology. Using exhaust gas energy, the turbocharger drives a turbine-powered centrifugal air compressor that converts air velocity into air pressure, increasing the flow of air into the engine cylinders. This operation results is a stronger “explosion” for better engine performance marked by a boost of output power, sustained power at high altitudes, decreased noise and emissions, and improved fuel economy.

Fitted with a wastegate, boots pressure is stabilized in the turbocharged system, as it employs a turbine bypass valve to regulate the exhaust air pressure towards the turbine wheel and optimize the boost pressure towards the intake manifold as it maintains smooth power delivery and keeps it from damaging the engine.

CRDi with Very Green Technology

From these strides in diesel engine technology, Hyundai moved up to a whole new level by incorporating VGT in the CRDi engine Variable Geometry Turbo Charger may be the exact translation of the VGT in automotive jargon but in layman’s speak, VGT also stands for Very Green Technology, as it optimizes the best qualities delivered by CRDi engine in areas of fuel efficiency, cleaner emission quality and improved engine longevity with reduced NVH levels (noise, vibration, & harshness).

VGT is the next generation in turbocharger technology that allows for optimum air intake to allow continuous flow of dense air into the engine that will yield better combustion for enhanced power delivery and engine efficiency.

By employing variable vanes or nozzles to direct exhaust flow into the turbocharger turbine, VGT maximized the use of exhaust gas by contacting vanes at the right angle, thereby optimizing their position to suit a particular engine condition. At low rpm, the VGT’s vane geometry is slightly closed to increase exhaust velocity, which imparts maximum energy in the turbine. This action causes the turbocharger to spin faster, forcing air into the combustion chamber to provide a quick spool up of power, thus, minimizing turbo lag. While at high speeds, the variables vanes of the VGT become fully open to maximize exhaust velocity, unleashing the engine’s maximum power for demanding road conditions.

The result: optimum engine performance is achieved at any rpm range for better fuel mileage and all-around dynamic performance. Noxious oxides or NOX emissions are also reduced, due to complete combustion of fuel supported by optimum air intake.

Among Hyundai’s vehicles equipped with the CRDi VGT technology are the Grand Starex 2.5-lier DOHC 16V, Sta Fe 2.2-liter in 2WD or 4WD variants, and i30 1.6-liter.

Petrol Power

Embracing the same zeal in creating the most advanced diesel engines, Hyundai crafted cutting edge gasoline engines that are exceptional in make, as well as in performance.

Among these are the compact powerplants found in Getz and i10. Equipped with a 1.1-liter SOHC engine, the Getz delivers maximum power of 66ps at 5,500rpm and maximum torque of 10.1kg-m at 3,200 for an energetic drive that’s perfect for the bustling metropolis. The i10 on the other hand is fitted with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine that delivers maximum power of 74.9ps at 6,000 rmp, for impressive drivability and reliable pulling power. The i10’s engine also remarkably economical and “green” in operation with its improved intake and exhaust system that helps burn fuel efficiently, lessening its impact on both your pocket and the environment with lesser particulate or toxic emissions.

The V6 Advantage

From the sprightly compact petrol engine, Hyundai developed another engine poised to rival the engines of other sophisticated car marques- the 3.8-liter FR Lambda V6 engine of the Genesis, a remarkable engineering achievement of Hyundai that boasts of premium levels of refinement, technology, and unbridles engine performance. Housed in a lightweight aluminum block, this high performance 3.8-liter rear wheel drive engine is fitted with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and Variable Intake System (VIS) that maximize both intake and exhaust efficiency for reliable, all-around dynamic performance and better fuel consumption.

Delivering maximum power of 290ps at 6,200rpm and maximum torque of 36.5kg-m at 4,500rpm, the Genesis transforms into a bracing roaster, yet it’s superbly poised and stable even at full throttle.

From the Genesis, Hyundai upped the ante with its introduction of the Genesis Coupe- now a globally acclaimed sports coupe- powered with an all-aluminum 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine. This powerplant delivers an estimated 303 horsepower and 36.8kg of torque, unleashing its ferocity on the road. In just 6 seconds, the Genesis Coupe’s range-topping powerplant can take you from 0 to 60 miles per hour for one mean adrenaline rush. For optimum performance, the 3.8-liter engine utilizes Dual Continuously Valuable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) and a new Tuning Intake System (TIS) that helps cylinders breathe efficiently at slow and high RPM. With better breathing through TIS, Genesis Coupe delivers outstanding off acceleration and passing performance, and excellent fuel efficiency.

Another engine variant that infuses the Genesis Coupe with remarkable power is a turbocharged, intercooler 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine equipped with D-CVVT on the intake and exhaust camshaft. With a cast-aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head, this 2.0-liter powerplant may seem lightweight in design but delivers a punchy performance nonetheless, generating an estimated 210 horsepower and 30.5kg-m of torque.

The Tetha II arrives

Furthering its capacities in technology, Hyundai now defies convention with an engine that makes its newest Compact SUV worthy of an all-power distinction- the Theta II of the all-new Hyundai Tucson.

Hyundai makes a mighty shift from the Beta engine of the previous Tucson to the more sophisticated Theta II engine to muscle up the Tucson’s on-road and off-road performance. The all-new Tucson commands exhilarating power with a choice of two cutting-edge Hyundai engines: the Tetha II 2.4-liter (4WD) and the Theta II 2.0-liter (2WD). Equipped with a Dual CVVT (intake and exhaust camshaft phaser), the Tucson’s 2.4-liter petrol engine chums out maximum output of 177ps at 6,200rpm, and maximum torque of 23.1kg-m at 4,000rpm. The 2.0-liter petrol engine with D-CVVT on the other hand easily unleashes maximum power output of 166ps at 6,200rpm, and maximum torque of 20.1kg-m at 4,600rpm. Compared with the Beta engine of the previous Tucson with the same engine displacement, the 2.0-liter Theta II engine delivers a 24.6% increase in power, reinforcing the all-new Tucson’s exhilarating drive. Performance is upgraded in both Theta II engine variants with the application of a two-stage Variable Intake System (VIS) that allows switching between long and short-intake manifold resulting in optimized “engine breathing” to  provide you consistently supple power.

The all-new Tucson’s powerplant have undergone major improvements in  design and performance. All aluminum in design and performance. All-aluminum in design with Stainless Steel Exhaust Manifold, the Tucson’s new Theta II engines are now lighter and much durable compared to the Beta 2.0-liter engine. The incorporation of D-CVVT, or the Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, and VIS in the Theta II engines ups the all-new Tucson’s power, acceleration, and fuel economy, while keeping its engine operation environmentally sound with lesser emissions. Timing Chain Driven instead of Timing Belt Driven, the all-new Tucson’s Theta II engines are more durable and easier to maintain, contributing to better service-ability, hence, lower maintenance costs. Fitted with Electronics Throttle Control, these engines offer faster response and more accurate air/fuel ratio, thus, elevating vehicle drivability and improving fuel economy.
